Solar wood kiln plans for 300-400 board feet of lumber (45 or 55 degree collector angle for northern latitudes)
CA$20.00
These plans are for a 4x8 foot solar kiln for drying lumber or firewood. The collector area is approximately 40 sqft, which is sufficient for approximately 300-400 board feet of lumber. The design principles are based on the Virginia Tech solar kiln widely available online, but I modified the plans to be much smaller, simpler, and to minimize waste of materials. I also designed a version with a 55 degree collector angle more suitable for northern latitudes (ideally should be the same as your latitude plus 5-10 degrees to optimize winter performance).
Purchase includes Sketchup file containing plans, as well as a materials list, cut list, and instructions. Aside from building materials, the kiln will require 2 fans, which can be powered by direct solar or AC power.
